Forbidden to look down on others

Tawaadhu’ (humility) was an outstanding attribute of Hadhrat Hasan. He considered himself inferior to everyone else. One day while walking along the bank of the river Dajlah he saw a Habshi (Abyssinian) with a woman and a wine-bottle. A thought crossed his mind: ‘This man cannot be better than me because he is with a woman and consuming wine.’ As the thought crossed his mind a boat with seven occupants appeared on the river. Suddenly the boat began sinking. Seeing the plight of the boat-people the Habshi dived into the water and safely brought out one person. He returned and brought out a second man. He continued his rescue until he had saved six people. Turning to Hadhrat Hasan, the Habshi said: “If you are better than me, then save the seventh one. O...

Never hate the sinners, but only the sins

Hazrat Arib Billah Hakeem Akhtar (Damat barakatuhum) said: “Mawlana Qasim Nanotwi (rahmatullahi alayhi) once saw a Hindu street-cleaner that he knew, taking a stroll in Jannah in his dream. He asked him in the dream, “O Lala Jee, how have you entered Jannah?” The Hindu man answered, “At the time of death, I uttered that phrase…” Notice that he is referring to the kalimah as “that phrase” due to the fact that for a Hindu, the kalimah is a phrase that must never be mentioned. But Allah granted him the tawfeeq (guidance) of uttering it before his death. His whole life he had been worshipping idols and statues, but in the end, he was blessed with imaan (true faith). This is the why having hatred in the heart for a disbeliever is haraam (completely...

Repentance Draws Allah (SWT)’s Mercy

During the time of Musa (Alayhis Salam) (The Prophet Moses), the Bani Israil were afflicted with a severe drought. Together, they begged Allah (SWT) for rain, but to no avail. The heat came more intense and the skies remained cloudless. Musa (Alayhis salaam) then cried out to Allah (SWT), “O Allah (SWT), if my status means nothing to You then I beseech You by the grace of Muhammad (SAW) to please grant us rain.” Allah (SWT) sent a revelation down to him: “Your status is noble in My sight, however, there is a person amongst you, who has disobeyed Me for forty years. It is because of him, that I am withholding the rains you.” Musa (Alayhis salaam) stood up and addressed the congregation, “O sinner, who has disobeyed Allah (SWT) for forty years, please...

Sincere Repentance is Rewarded

Abu Said Khudri (radiallahu anhu) narrates that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Among the people of the past, was a man who had killed ninety-nine people. He then asked about the most knowledgeable person in the land. He was directed to a monk, so he went to him and asked, ‘I have killed ninety-nine people. Can I repent?’ The monk replied, ‘No.’ So he killed the monk, bringing the number he had killed to one hundred. He again asked about the most knowledgeable person in the land, and was directed to a certain scholar. He approached the scholar and said, ‘I have killed one hundred people. Can I repent?’ The scholar replied, ‘Yes, who can stop you from repenting? Go to such and such a land, where there are people who worship...
